The Quest for Authentic Manhood

At FamilyLife, we consider the DVD-driven course, The Quest for Authentic Manhood (QfAM), to be among the most effective programs for fostering positive, sustainable change in men, marriages, families, and communities. Throughout the 24-week duration of QfAM, participants have the opportunity to reflect on their past, present, and future lives.

Robert Lewis, the developer of QfAM, has identified five distinct wounds that can affect men, such as the absent father wound or the overly bonded to mother wound. He likens these wounds to carrying an unopened suitcase; if these issues are not addressed, they can negatively impact a man’s life indefinitely. During a promotional tour for QfAM, we showcased a video illustration of this “suitcase” to various men. An elderly gentleman, aged 80, was moved to tears, acknowledging he had carried this emotional burden his entire life.

The course also allows men to examine their current circumstances, including their work, marriages, relationships with children, and other personal connections. Many young men have reported finding healing in their relationships with their fathers through this process. Additionally, QfAM encourages participants to consider their future, addressing the necessary changes to leave a positive legacy.

Quintus Swanepoel has shown immense dedication to promoting this course widely. He is now joined by Dr. Jonas Khaoue, who shares the same enthusiasm. Dr. Khaoue recently presented QfAM to influential pastors, and Quintus had the honour of awarding Graduation Certificates to those who completed the course. One pastor, Cyril Dlalisa of Pretoria North, was so inspired that he plans to start a group for men in his congregation. This initiative is set to commence next week, God willing. Other attendees of Dr. Khaoue’s group are also planning to facilitate the course.

Currently, Dr. Jonas is presenting QfAM to nine men at his church, with completion expected by May 2025, God willing. Some participants have expressed interest in starting their own groups. Additionally, Willem Kelber introduced QfAM to a group of men in 2024 and observed its positive impact.
