Making moves through prayer

Reflecting on the beginnings of CCC’s global ministry in 1952 is a remarkable source of inspiration. I was deeply moved and encouraged when I had the privilege of meeting Paul Utley, the man who was called to establish the first prayer chain for CCC during those foundational years. This incredible encounter took place at the Global Prayer Conference in Egypt in June 2023, where I learned that he is still actively ministering in Thailand.

Hearing him recount the story of how it all began fills me with awe. The massive movement we see today was birthed from a 24/7 prayer chain he organized—before the ministry officially launched on a campus in 1952. He shared powerful testimonies about Bill and Vonette Bright, highlighting their profound love for God and their steadfast prayer lives. Their unwavering faith and obedience to God’s calling paved the way for this ministry, which was rooted in continual prayer and intercession.

The success of those early years reminds us of the power of prayer and the faithfulness of a God who hears and answers. It is incredible to reflect on how Bill and Vonette Bright recognized their total dependence on Jesus Christ from the start. Around-the-clock prayer chains and daily gatherings for intercession were hallmarks of their ministry. Today, we witness the fruit of their labour: a global movement and countless transformed lives, all made possible through God’s faithfulness and their reliance on Him.

Let this inspire us to continue trusting in Jesus Christ and walking in obedience to His call. Through prayer, listening to His Word, and the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we can take bold steps of faith toward fulfilling the Great Commission. With God, all things are possible—even in South Africa! May we commit to creating movements of prayer everywhere, trusting Jesus to transform hearts and lives.

Vonette Bright once said:

“We knew that Scripture said to pray without ceasing. We were depending upon the Holy Spirit to guide every step we took and work in students’ lives, in response to prayer. Cru was born in prayer, and prayer is still our lifeline.”

Let us meditate on Psalm 143:5:

“I remember the days of old; I meditate on all that You have done; I ponder the work of Your hands.”
