Ignited for Ikhaya

Campus Crusade for Christ hosted a fundraising event in July called Ignite, to bring awareness and garner support for the Ikhaya Project. The Ikhaya Project, also called the Ikhaya Lethu Sonke Project (from the Zulu “Ikhaya” meaning house), is a housing project that was launched to help CCC staff, particularly those with limited means, have a place to call home while they fulfil their calling as missionaries on staff.

Housing takes up to 50% of staff salaries and with the addition of taxes and other fees tied to buying a house in our country, potential homeowners end up paying 3 times the original price of the house. Some of our staff are already struggling to raise support and for them buying their own home seems an impossible task. They end up renting flats year after year with already limited means. That’s why the Ikhaya Project was birthed.

The Project has already registered a trust – The Ikhaya Trust, that will safeguard and control the running of this housing Project. The project has 2 phases: Phase one- The Ikhaya Trust buys a property. This could be a property that needs to be renovated, which the staff would help renovate and move into. An alternative would be for the Trust to buy land to build onto. The Trust would then build flats for staff to stay in, while they wait for Phase two- helping staff own homes and raise their families.

The next generation of missionaries who will join the organisation should not have to worry about owning a home or be deterred from joining staff because their housing needs wouldn’t be met. Staff would be free to focus on fulfilling their calling. They will also be free to have disciples over at their houses for fellowship and meetings. This will deepen the discipleship relationship between missionaries and those they lead.

The reason for the Ignite event was to “ignite” people’s hearts to invest in this great project. Eddie Smit, former Chairperson of Campus Crusade for Christ South Africa, and Director at Snyman de Jager, Pastor Julius Mengot, current board member of the said board and leadership coach, and Chris Dirks, visionary and National Team Leader of Campus Crusade for Christ South Africa were some of the speakers at the event.
