It’s a new year and a new beginning for all of us! January passed in a wink, and we are picking up the pace and reigns of ministry again. The good news is always that we do not operate alone, that our God is so gracious and present in our everyday lives it makes all things possible, God’s presence brings the promise of belonging, not being alone, that we can count on Him in every little detail of our personal lives and ministry. How amazing is our Triune, ever present, omniscient God! His Grace still amazes me!
I want to share some thoughts on prayer and intercession with you. Many of us grew up in church going homes, where routine prayer was part of everyday life. Prayers were said in the mornings, evenings and at the table sharing in family meals. Maybe you’d say it was traditional prayers, just something we did out of obligation, not really from a place of true faith in God and relationship with Jesus.
Some of us might not have had the same experience, because our parents were not Christian or religious at all. With all of this said, our experience as children and before we truly knew Jesus, could influence our view and experience in prayer. Our perspectives on prayer might not be exactly Christ centered.
Think about other religions and how they view prayer and meditation, rituals and shrines for idols, pleasing their gods with human patterns and repetitions. Might they have influenced my view on prayer slightly in the wrong direction?
Let us be wise to evaluate through God’s word our ideas about Christian prayer and hold fast to Jesus Christ in prayer.
How would you describe your current experience of prayer? Is it a time of special intimacy with the Lord? Do you look forward to prayer time with expectation focused on the Lord?
Here are Biblical truths from scripture that we can hold fast to in prayer, let us allow the Holy Spirit to give us God’s perspective on prayer and conversation with Him:
- God hears our prayers when we come to Him with honesty and truthful hearts. “The Lord is near to all who call on Him, to all who call on Him in truth. He will fulfill the desire of those who fear and worship Him. He will also hear their cry and save them.” – Psalms 145: 18-19 (reference Jeremiah 33:1-3)
- We can call on the Lord in times of distress. He is glorified in our trust of Him. “Offer to God the sacrifice of thanksgiving and pay your vows to the Most High; Call on Me in the day of trouble; I will rescue you, and you shall honor and glorify Me.” – Psalms 50: 14-15 (reference Acts 2:21)
- The Lord wants to meet with us personally in prayer, there is a great reward in our meeting with Him. “But when you pray, go into your most private room, close the door and pray to Your Father, who is in secret, and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.” – Matthew 6:6 (reference Jeremiah 29:12-14) Matthew 6:9-15 is Jesus’s example to the disciples and to us for praying.
- Jesus says that He is the Door through which we can enter to find good spiritual nourishment and rest (good pasture – NLT). “I am the Door; anyone who enters through Me will be saved [and will live forever] and find pasture (spiritual security). – John 10:9 AMP
- We are not alone in prayer and intercession. The Holy Spirit intercedes on our behalf. “In the same way the Spirit comes to us and helps us in our weakness. We do not know what prayer to offer or how to offer it as we should, but the Spirit Himself knows our need and at the right time intercedes on our behalf with sighs and groanings too deep for words. And He who searches the heart knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because the Spirit intercedes before God on behalf of God’s people in accordance with God’s will.” – Romans 8:26-27
- Christ Jesus also intercedes for us at the right hand of the Father. “Who is the one who condemns us? Christ Jesus, who was raised from the dead, and who is at the right hand of God interceding with the Father for us.” – Romans 8:34
- We can come to God with confidence, with freedom from shame & guilt when we are in Christ Jesus. “Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” – Hebrews 4:14-16 (quoting verse 16)
Here are some questions that can help us assess our prayer life on a practical level, to help us grow in the next Season:
- Do you pray on your own, having conversations with Jesus through the day as you go along with daily tasks? How can you take practical steps to make this a reality in the next month?
- Do you have regular prayer times, where you focus your attention on God and scriptures from the Bible? When would be the best time of the day for you to incorporate this practically? Which steps can you take to progress in your journey.
- Is there a place where you engage with the body of Christ, joining hands with believers to pray and trust for things pertaining to the advancement of God’s Kingdom on earth? Make plans to engage regularly with fellow believers.
- Do you pray together as a ministry team, trusting Jesus for His guidance in our execution of our calling to make disciples of men? How can your ministry team make this a weekly or bi-weekly occurrence?
Let us trust Jesus, as CCC SA, for a deepening of our individual and corporate prayer experiences, may it be evident to others that “we have been with Jesus”
Acts 4:13 “… they recognize that they have been with Jesus.”
