Athletes get a fresh start with God

New beginnings—that’s what university is all about! For student-athletes at the University of Johannesburg, it’s not just about fresh academic opportunities or new friendships (some even scouting for future spouses!). At AIA, we see it as the perfect time to introduce them to a fresh start with God.

Every Wednesday night, about 15 UJ athletes gather for Bible study, where Sdu, my wife Refiloe, and I dive into God’s Word together. These sessions are the highlight of our week! We usually start with an icebreaker, hear an inspiring testimony, and then get into the heart of it—the Scriptures.

Lately, we’ve been exploring the Gospel of John, and the questions from students keep pouring in: “How do you prioritize God with a packed training schedule?” or “How do you truly walk away from a life of sin?” Seeing these young athletes wrestle with their faith, some even making the life-changing decision to follow Christ, is incredible. Our dream? To see them grow into leaders who take the gospel beyond the sports field and into every sphere of life.

Paul puts it best in 1 Corinthians 9:26-27:

“So I run with purpose in every step. I am not just shadowboxing. I discipline my body like an athlete, training it to do what it should.”

Just like in their sport, we encourage them to commit to their spiritual training—because finishing this race strong is what truly matters!
